Analyzing the Interview

Hanging Out:

The subject of my interview uses technologies to communicate with friends through text messaging and the use of social media outlets such as instagram.

Messing Around:

My young person's biggest interest and the thing that she cited as the most fun on the computer was looking up OneDirection things. She is also going to their concert and found this information on the internet.

Geeking Out:

During the interview she talks of how she uses the computer at school, which she said was mainly for research and typing papers. She said that she also likes to find and play games on the internet.

Schooling:

We did not talk about using technology to read books but we did talk about the use of the computer in school for research. She said that she traditionally uses Google for her research.

Below are some quotes from this week's readings of Chapters 4, 5 and 6 that I am considering for use in my final case report:

"The idea that digital technology might help to motivate reluctant learners and provide more meaningful contexts for literacy has captured the attention of an increasing number of educators (Merchant, 2007b)."

"The evidence assembled for this chapter suggests that while increasing numbers of teachers are aware of wikis and are making use of them in classroom contexts, they are not yet using them in ways that reflect the array of practices and attitudes identified with participatory culture."

"Debates about the educational worth of video-gaming and virtual world game-play have recently attracted considerable attention (see the Byron Review, 2007). Although a considerable amount of popular debate has focused on the possible negative effects of gaming – particularly exposure to inappropriate or violent content – empirical research that investigates their learning potential in classrooms is still in its infancy. At the same time, while claims are made about high levels of learner engagement in video-gaming (Squires, 2002) and the potential to design powerful learning environments using virtual world technology (Dede et al., 2006), there is clearly scope for more evidence to support these claims."

  1. It's interesting how the girl you interviewed had completely different uses for technology in school, and it was for writing and research, because that's exactly what the young man I interviewed said about using computers in school. He also mentioned wanting to look for games to play in school, or wished that his teachers would let him do that. It seems like the main thing kids use tech for outside of school are not anything like what we do with them in school, with the exception of research. I'd like to try and find some ways to use gaming, social media, and music/videos in the classroom, if possible. That will be a challenge, though, so many variables.

  2. Natalie,
I think that your quotes from this weeks readings go great with your interview analysis. The girl that I interviewed had the same feelings with they way they use technology out of school and how they would like to use it in school and what they really do. She told me that none of her teachers will let her play games because of all of the risk and challenges. I thought that the Flickr part of this book was very interesting. I would love to try to use that or edmodo with my students but we really have to watch with everything. We have so much stuff to consider when we try and bring technology into our classroom that are student centered.

  4. I found that your young person sounds a lot like mine, especially in how she uses her technology in school. She never mentions extensive use of technology in her classrooms. It seems that this is a common trait among most of the young people that have been interviewed. Aside from research and typing papers, there isn't much use for technology and computers. I love the quotes you chose from the past chapters. I think they go very well with what you have written here.
